Resizing Vintage Rings

26th May 2013

We have added several vintage rings from the 1700s-1920s. Most of our Art Deco and Edwardian vintage jewelry is from several parts of Europe and America . The oldest ruby rings are from the Georgian period of the1700s Turkey. All of them are true .925 Sterling Silver. The fact that they are real sterling silver is important to note for resizing information. Hands and fingers were smaller long ago, a lot of the rings maybe a size 5-5.5 however we did manage to pick rings that were of modern average size (size 6-8). If you see a ring you really like, but possibly isn't your size there is an option to get this ring resized at another jewelry store. Some customers see these rings and decide that they want it as a wedding ring. Those customers then buy one of our rings and bring it to another jeweler to get it resized.

There are two ways a ring can be resized.

1. For a smaller size- a jeweler can reshape the ring by grinding with tools or a machine, or if there isn't a pattern (the ruby rings too have a modern pattern in the band) it can be cut and then replaces with another similar band of silver. Note it may be noticeable.

2.For larger - It can be added on by cutting then adding a similar band

But beware, most rings should only be resized 2 sizes as it may ruin the ring and it may look unnatural and you may be unhappy with the results (but they are exceptions). Also note that the ring may no longer be a perfect round shape after being resized, but if you really like a piece of jewelry it is worth it.

I hope this helps with anyone who saw a ring they couldn’t fit in our vintage section but still wanted to buy it.
